Chapter Twenty

“Whoa,” Cassie breathed out as we got back to the privacy of the kitchen. “That was quite the performance.”

I raised my eyebrows and moved around the bar, looking for my trusty notebook. Even though I’d been working on wedding prep still since Marlene got arrested, now that she was released, I felt a huge amount of pressure to get moving on my tasks.

“I wonder if the email got her out of jail,” I said. Cassie glanced toward Maria and I smiled. “Maria, this is my friend Cassie. Cassie, Maria is on our team. She’s been keeping her eyes out around the B&B. Speaking of which, I was hoping you could keep your eyes out when you’re cleaning the rooms today, especially for Donald Watts. Do you know which room is his?”

She nodded and leaned back on the counter, crossing her arms over her chest.

“Don’t do anything illegal, though! I don’t mean to get you into any trouble. Just have a look around and let me know if you see something that looks out of place.” She nodded, and I continued. “I don’t know if he has anything to do with Trisha’s murder, but he’s been acting really suspicious around here and he’s the one who originally fingered Marlene. Could have been a coverup or something?” I shrugged my shoulders and pulled a gigantic bag of shelled pecans I’d gotten from Tranquil Valley Farms out of the pantry along with the sugar and cinnamon.

Maria nodded, “I’ll see what I can find out.” She looked at her watch. “And it looks like it’s time for me to begin cleaning. I’ll let you know what I find out.” She gave us a sly smile and grabbed her cleaning equipment from the pantry.

Cassie smiled too. “Woo, this is exciting! I’m glad the wedding is a go! But I hope it means Ty and Ryan have found someone else to focus the investigation on. I sure would like to see this murder solved.” She grabbed a pecan from the bag and popped it in her mouth. “Okay, I’ve got to get going to open the shop in a second. But what are your thoughts on the murder this morning, Abby? Anything new since last night?”

I told her about the property insurance and my questions about Greg. She frowned when I finished. “Well, that is strange. Hopefully, the email you sent to the station gets them thinking in that direction too. Oh, Ty also said that they got a lock on the tire tracks they pulled from the front of the B&B. He said it was a compact car, probably a sedan. The tire was a Goodyear Assurance brand and looked pretty new. But they wouldn’t be able to tell much more than that unless they had the actual tire to compare.” She came around and gave me a quick hug. “Okay, got to get going, but keep me in the loop!”

I pondered that as I melted butter and gathered my ingredients to make the candied pecans for the pear and pecan salad.
